When you're breaking out, it's tempting to scrub, dry out and attack every spot. Unfortunately, that usually makes things worse. Stripped skin gets irritated, and irritated skin breaks out more.
Korean skincare takes the opposite approach: clean gently, exfoliate a few times a week, calm redness, and always moisturize. Here's how to build that routine, step by step.
A quick note: if your acne is painful, cystic, or not improving after a couple of months, please see a dermatologist. Skincare helps a lot, but some acne needs prescription treatment.
Step 1: Cleanse gently (morning and night)
Choose a low-pH cleanser that leaves your skin comfortable, not tight.
- COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser — a mild, everyday gel with a little tea tree. A classic for oily and acne-prone skin.
- COSRX Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser — a gentle salicylic acid (BHA) cleanser that helps keep pores clear. Great if you get blackheads.
- Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser — a refreshing gel that deep-cleans pores without over-drying.
Wear sunscreen or makeup? In the evening, start with a light cleansing oil like SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Light Cleansing Oil. It sounds counterintuitive, but oil dissolves sunscreen and sebum better than foam alone. Then follow with your gel cleanser.
Step 2: Exfoliate, but only 2–3 nights a week
Chemical exfoliants unclog pores and fade rough texture far more gently than scrubs. Pick one:
- SOME BY MI AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Days Miracle Toner — our most popular acne toner. Three acids plus tea tree for blackheads, bumps and texture.
- COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner — a lighter option that's gentle enough to build up slowly.
Start twice a week and increase only if your skin is happy. If you feel stinging or see new redness, scale back.
Step 3: Calm and hydrate
On the nights you're not exfoliating (and every morning), use a soothing toner to calm redness and add hydration:
- MISSHA Artemisia Calming Essence — 100% mugwort extract, a K-beauty favorite for red, angry skin.
- Isntree Green Tea Fresh Toner — light, refreshing hydration that won't feel heavy on oily skin.
Step 4: Treat with a serum
- SOME BY MI Snail Truecica Miracle Repair Serum — snail mucin and centella to help skin recover from breakouts and look smoother.
- SOME BY MI AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Days Miracle Serum Light — for stubborn blackheads and oiliness. Use it on nights you're not using an exfoliating toner.
- Haruharu Wonder Centella 4% TXA Dark Spot Serum — for the dark marks breakouts leave behind, with tranexamic acid and niacinamide.
Step 5: Moisturize (yes, really)
Skipping moisturizer can make skin produce more oil. Choose something light and fragrance-free like Torriden DIVE-IN Hyaluronic Acid Cream. It hydrates without clogging or feeling greasy.
Step 6: Sunscreen every morning
Sun makes post-acne marks darker and slower to fade, and many acne ingredients make skin more sun-sensitive. Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sunscreen is lightweight with no white cast.

Breakouts on your back or chest?
SOME BY MI AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Days Miracle Acne Clear Body Cleanser brings the same acid trio to a body wash. Let it sit on the skin for a minute before rinsing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using two exfoliants on the same night. Pick one acid product per night.
- Adding everything at once. Introduce one new product every week or two so you know what's working (and what isn't). Patch test first.
- Picking and squeezing. It's the fastest way to get dark marks and scars.
- Giving up too soon. Give a routine 4–8 weeks before judging it.
